Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is scheduled to return to competitive cricket on September 20, featuring in the India A squad for a three-match ODI series against Australia A. However, the first ODI against the West Indies is slated for September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram. Selectors will need to assess whether Hardik is fully prepared to bowl his full quota of 10 overs and remain active on the field throughout a 50-over match.

This selection could prove to be a lifeline for Rishabh Pant, who had previously lost his Test vice-captaincy and his spot in the limited-overs squad due to poor IPL form. A vacancy for a second wicketkeeper in the ODI squad has arisen because Ishan Kishan has been included in the Asian Games (Japan) squad. Experienced player KL Rahul will serve as the primary wicketkeeper and deputy (vice-captain) to Shubman Gill.

Changes are expected in the ODI team's middle order as Shreyas Iyer is occupied with Asian Games commitments. Yashasvi Jaiswal will serve as the backup opener, while Rajat Patidar could be included as a backup for the middle order. Immediately following the conclusion of the West Indies ODI series, both Gaikwad (as captain) and Patidar will join the India A squad.
