Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra also took a dig at the Pakistan PM, making the post a topic of discussion among cricket fans.
Pakistan Beat India by 4 Wickets in Hong Kong Sixes 2026
Pakistan registered a four-wicket victory over India in their Group C match of the Hong Kong Sixes 2026 on Friday. The result became a major talking point, as matches between India and Pakistan always attract significant attention from cricket fans.
Batting first, India scored 88 runs in their allotted six overs. Shashank Singh played an important innings of 40 runs, while Nitish Rana contributed 19 runs.
In reply, Pakistan chased down the target in just 3.5 overs to secure a four-wicket win. The victory gave Pakistani fans a reason to celebrate, especially after the team's disappointing results against India in several major tournaments.
Shehbaz Sharif's Congratulatory Post Goes Viral After India Defeat
Following Pakistan's victory, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took to social media to congratulate the players. He praised their performance against India and appreciated Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi for his efforts in supporting the team.
In his post, Shehbaz Sharif wrote:
"Congratulations to our boys on a fantastic four-wicket victory over India in the opening match of the Hong Kong Sixes 2026! It was a good game of cricket. I also appreciate PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and his team for working hard to prepare and support our players."
However, his message soon attracted criticism because of an incorrect statement about Pakistan's opening match in the tournament.
Pakistan PM Makes a Big Mistake, Gets Trolled on Social Media
The main issue with Shehbaz Sharif's post was his claim that Pakistan's match against India was the opening game of the Hong Kong Sixes 2026.
In reality, Pakistan had already played its opening match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before facing India. Pakistan lost that encounter by one wicket.
Cricket fans quickly noticed the mistake and questioned how the Prime Minister could congratulate the team without checking the tournament results. As a result, the discussion shifted from Pakistan's victory over India to the factual error in his social media post.
Aakash Chopra Takes a Dig at Shehbaz Sharif's Post
Former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra also reacted to Shehbaz Sharif's congratulatory message. He highlighted the mistake and pointed out that Pakistan had already lost its first match against the UAE.
Chopra wrote:
"We are in such a hurry to say that we have defeated India that we don't even check the facts. You had lost your first match against the UAE. And anyway, you can judge the level of cricket in Pakistan by the fact that the Prime Minister of that country is tweeting about the Hong Kong Sixes. Seriously."
His comments further fuelled the discussion on social media, with cricket fans focusing on the Prime Minister's incorrect claim.
What Is Hong Kong Sixes 2026? Know the Format and Teams
The Hong Kong Sixes is a six-a-side cricket tournament organised by Cricket Hong Kong, China. Unlike traditional cricket matches, each team gets only six overs to bat.
The 2026 edition features 12 teams, divided into four groups of three teams each. India and Pakistan are placed in Group C.
Although the tournament is ICC-recognised, its format is different from regular international cricket, making it a shorter and faster version of the game.
Pakistan's victory over India became a memorable moment for its supporters. However, Shehbaz Sharif's mistake in his congratulatory post and Aakash Chopra's reaction turned the result into an even bigger social media discussion.
