Harita Bhadra, Asian Games 2026: The athletics track at the ongoing Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan, witnessed a thrilling spectacle. In the women's 200m final, young Indian sprinter Harita Bhadra clinched the bronze medal in a heart-stopping photo finish.
Clocking a time of 23.20 seconds, Harita secured her spot on the podium by edging out Japanese sprinter Abigirufuka Ido (23.21 seconds) by a mere 0.01 seconds a hundredth of a second.
A Battle Decided by Hundredths of a Second and a Medal Won
The final race was fast-paced and fiercely contested from the very start. Singapore’s star sprinter Shanti Pereira won the gold with a time of 22.78 seconds, while China’s Chen Yuji secured the silver medal in 22.93 seconds. However, the battle for third place saw Harita Bhadra and Japan’s home contender Abigirufuka Ido racing neck-and-neck right up to the finish line.
As they crossed the finish line, the two appeared almost level, but a technical review and photo-finish cameras confirmed that Harita (23.20s) had edged out Ido (23.21s) by the narrowest of margins.
With this, Harita Bhadra has become the first Indian sprinter to win a medal in the women's 200m race at the Asian Games since national record holder Dutee Chand won a silver medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.
Saving Her Best Performance for the Final
Harita showed steady improvement in her speed throughout every round of the tournament. She qualified for the final by finishing second in the heats with a time of 23.31 seconds. In the high-pressure environment of the final, she improved her time by 0.11 seconds, clocking 23.20 seconds to achieve the biggest international milestone of her career.
Another rising Indian sprinter, Unnathi Aiyappa Boland, also competed in the final of this event. Running in her first Asian Games final, Unnathi clocked 23.46 seconds and finished in a respectable sixth place.
