IND vs WI 1st ODI: In the first match of the ODI series between India and West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, the Caribbean opening pair rewrote the history books.
Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first, but West Indies openers Justin Greaves and John Campbell proved this decision completely wrong by unleashing a storm of runs on the field.
A feat achieved after 24 years
Opening the innings in this match, Justin Greaves and John Campbell took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners, completing a 100-run partnership in just 13.3 overs. With this, a West Indies opening pair recorded a century partnership against India on Indian soil after a long wait of 24 years.
Notably, since 2025, the West Indies had played over 20 ODI matches, yet none of their opening pairs had managed to even cross the 65-run mark for the first wicket.
Surprisingly, this was only the second time John Campbell and Justin Greaves walked out together as openers in an ODI. While the Caribbean team had been struggling to find a solid opening partnership for months, this duo adopted an aggressive approach right from the moment they stepped onto Indian soil, putting 100 runs on the board in just 81 balls.
A massive feat achieved in the powerplay itself
Greaves and Campbell threw the Indian fast bowlers off their line and length right from the very first over. By the end of the 10-over powerplay, the West Indies had amassed 85 runs without losing a wicket. This marks the third-highest score by the West Indies against India in the opening 10 overs in the history of ODI cricket.
