Devdutt Padikkal Century: Equals Pujara's 7-Year-Old Record in Colombo: Indian batsman Devdutt Padikkal made history with a magnificent batting display on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Showcasing a perfect blend of composure and aggression, Padikkal brought up his century off 168 balls. This marks the second century of his Test career; he had previously played a memorable innings of 167 runs in the first innings of the series opener in Galle.

It has been nearly seven years since an Indian player batting at the number 3 position achieved the feat of scoring centuries in consecutive Test matches. Before Padikkal, this record was held by Cheteshwar Pujara.
This is the first instance since the 2018-19 season that an Indian batsman has scored centuries in back-to-back Test matches on foreign soil. During the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Pujara had played historic innings of 106 runs in the Melbourne Test and 193 runs in the Sydney Test.

Padikkal-Gill 120-Run Stand Rescues India After Early Wickets

Early in the innings, Padikkal received two lifelines while batting on individual scores of 0 and 1.
However, making the most of these opportunities, he dug in at the crease:- Early Wicket of KL Rahul: Padikkal came to the crease after opener KL Rahul was dismissed for just 18 runs.
- Rebuilding with Jaiswal: He shared a 29-run partnership for the second wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal (45 runs).
- Match-Dominating Partnership with Gill: Subsequently, he forged a strong century partnership of 120 runs for the third wicket with captain Shubman Gill. Shubman Gill returned to the pavilion after scoring 50 runs.
