BCCI Plans Special ODI Series in South Africa Before 2027 World Cup: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already begun formulating strategies for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup. South Africa is set to host the majority of the matches for the 2027 World Cup (with Zimbabwe and Namibia serving as co-hosts). It is likely that almost all of the Indian team's matches will also take place in South Africa.
With this in mind, the BCCI is presenting a special proposal to Cricket South Africa (CSA) to bolster the Indian team's preparations.
BCCI Requests 4 to 6 Match ODI Series Before 2027 World Cup

According to a report by The Indian Express, discussions are underway between the BCCI and Cricket South Africa regarding the organization of a multi-match ODI series (comprising 4 to 6 matches).
The Indian board wants Team India to play this series against South Africa just before the World Cup begins, allowing the players to fine-tune their preparations on the country's bouncy and fast pitches.

Why Team India Urgently Needs This Special Bilateral Series

India last toured South Africa in 2024 for a T20 series. Under the International Cricket Council's (ICC) current Future Tours Programme (FTP), the Indian team has no ODI or bilateral series scheduled in South Africa leading up to the 2027 World Cup.
This is why the Indian team management, comprising captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir, has requested the BCCI to organize this series, allowing the team to acclimatize to the local conditions and weather.
Warm-Up Matches vs Proper Bilateral ODI Series
While all teams get the opportunity to play warm-up matches before any ICC tournament, the Indian team management believes that the pressure and competitive atmosphere of a proper bilateral ODI series differ significantly from those of warm-up games.
Since the new FTP is yet to be finalized, finding a window for this series just before the tournament should not pose a major challenge.
