Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Thalapathy Vijay, has launched the ‘Dream Olympics’ initiative in Chennai and honoured athletes who won medals at the Asian Games 2026 and the 46th Chess Olympiad held in Samarkand. The state government announced increased cash incentives worth ₹7.65 crore for Asian Games medal winners. Indian cricketer Washington Sundar received ₹75 lakh for winning gold as part of the Indian men’s cricket team.
Thalapathy Vijay Launches Dream Olympics Initiative in Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu government has launched the ‘Dream Olympics’ initiative to promote sporting talent and strengthen the state’s performance at international competitions. The event was organised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) at The Leela Palace in Chennai.
Chief Minister Vijay and Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna felicitated the medal-winning athletes and presented them with cheques for their cash incentives.
The government aims to provide better training, modern sports facilities and financial assistance to athletes to help them compete for medals at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the proposed 2036 Olympics.
Asian Games 2026 Prize Money: How Much Do Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalists Get?
The Tamil Nadu government has increased the cash incentives for Asian Games medal winners. Under the revised structure, athletes receive the following rewards based on their medal achievements:
- Gold Medal: ₹75 lakh
- Silver Medal: ₹50 lakh
- Bronze Medal: ₹30 lakh
Earlier, gold medal winners received ₹50 lakh, silver medalists received ₹30 lakh, and bronze medalists were awarded ₹20 lakh.
The revised incentives are intended to motivate athletes to perform better and strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem.
Team events also received financial recognition. Each member of the men’s team that won silver received ₹15 lakh, while every member of the women’s team that secured bronze received ₹10 lakh.
Washington Sundar Gets ₹75 Lakh for Asian Games Gold Medal
Indian men’s cricket team member Washington Sundar received ₹75 lakh as an incentive for winning gold at the Asian Games. He was part of the Indian team that secured the gold medal in the cricket competition.
G. Kamalini, a wicketkeeper-batter from Madurai who won gold with the Indian women’s cricket team, also expressed her gratitude for the state government’s support. She said the encouraging words from the Chief Minister meant a great deal to her.
Chess Star R. Praggnanandhaa Thanks Tamil Nadu Government for Support
Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa, who was part of the Indian team that won silver at the Chess Olympiad, praised the support provided by the Tamil Nadu government and SDAT.
He highlighted the assistance athletes continue to receive through the state’s elite sports scheme. Praggnanandhaa thanked Chief Minister Vijay, Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna and SDAT for their continued encouragement and support.
Vithya Ramraj Breaks 42-Year-Old National Record at Asian Games
Athlete Vithya Ramraj expressed happiness after winning three medals at the competition. She also highlighted her achievement of breaking a 42-year-old national record.
Vithya credited her coach and the support provided by the state government for helping her achieve success.
Meanwhile, T. K. Vishal, who won silver in the mixed 4x400m relay and bronze in the men’s 4x400m relay, welcomed the proposal to introduce air conditioning in sports hostels. He said improved living conditions could help athletes recover better and improve their performance.
Baranica Elangovan, who won bronze in the women’s pole vault, also thanked the government for providing new poles. She said the equipment helped her compete successfully at the Asian Games.

Satnam Singh Makes History in Asian Games Rowing, Eyes More Medals
Satnam Singh, who won bronze in the men’s double sculls rowing event at the Asian Games 2026, expressed optimism about the future of Indian rowing.
Satnam and his partner Salman Khan clocked 6 minutes and 13.25 seconds to secure the medal. The achievement was reported as India’s first-ever medal in the men’s double sculls event since the Asian Games began in 1951.
Satnam said gaining international experience helps athletes build confidence and handle the pressure of major competitions more effectively.
Tamil Nadu Plans Sports Hostels in All 38 Districts
Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna emphasised the need to modernise sports infrastructure across Tamil Nadu. He highlighted the need to renovate ageing stadiums, establish rehabilitation centres for athletes and develop dedicated facilities for para-athletes.
The state government has increased its sports budget and plans to establish sports hostels in all 38 districts. It also intends to organise sporting competitions for transgender athletes.
These initiatives are aimed at making sports facilities more accessible and creating better opportunities for athletes from different backgrounds.
Dream Olympics: Tamil Nadu Targets Medals at the 2028 and 2036 Olympics
Through the Dream Olympics initiative, the Tamil Nadu government aims to support athletes from the grassroots level to international competitions.
Increased financial incentives, improved training facilities and investment in sports infrastructure are expected to strengthen the state’s preparations for future Olympic events.
