National Sports Day was officially recognized in 2012, adding to the list of significant celebratory days in India. Dhyan Chand's name has become synonymous with excellence and skill in the realm of sports, particularly hockey. His mastery of the game, characterized by flawless ball control and an uncanny ability to score goals, earned him the title of “The Wizard.” His exceptional talent was instrumental in elevating India to new heights on the global sports stage.

Major Dhyan Chand played a pivotal role in securing India's Olympic gold medals in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Summer Olympics. Born in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, on August 29, 1905, Dhyan Chand rose to prominence during the pre-independence era, becoming a national icon.
His illustrious career spanned from 1926 to 1948, during which he played in 185 matches for India and scored over 400 goals, cementing his status as one of the greatest hockey players in history. After retiring as a Major in the Punjab Regiment of the Indian Army in 1956, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, in recognition of his contributions to sports.
Dhyan Chand passed away on December 3, 1979, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of athletes. National Sports Day also serves as the occasion for the presentation of the National Sports Awards, recognizing the achievements and contributions of athletes across the nation. The highest sporting honour, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, was renamed in his memory from the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, further immortalizing his impact on Indian sports.
