India vs Ireland: Fresh from their world-conquering triumph and playing under a new captain and the coaching of Gautam Gambhir, the Indian cricket team's performance in Belfast left fans stunned and disappointed. Led by Jay Mundra, an Indian passport holder who moved from Tonk, Rajasthan, to Ireland in 2021, the Irish bowlers brought the Indian batting lineup, considered the best in the world, crashing down to earth.

The Indian team, which had remained unbeaten in 16 consecutive bilateral T20 series, lost both matches of this two-game series. Team India, usually proud of its batting prowess, seemed to forget how to wield the bat in the absence of the flat, road-like pitches found at home. Sanju Samson fell victim to Jay Mundra on the very first ball in both matches.

Shreyas Iyer’s tenure as captain has got off to a dismal start. With this crushing defeat, the Indian team has set several unwanted records that no one would wish to remember. Let us take a look at the 10 embarrassing records India has set following this series:

Top 10 Unwanted Records Broken by Team India in Ireland T20I Series

1. First-Ever T20I Series Loss to Ireland

This current squad, under the coaching of Gautam Gambhir and the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, has become the first Indian team in history to lose a bilateral T20 series against Ireland. Prior to this, India had never lost a series to Ireland.

2. End of India's 16-Match T20I Series Unbeaten Streak

This defeat brought an end to India's streak of remaining unbeaten in 16 consecutive T20 series. Although this remains the record for the longest unbeaten run by any Full Member nation (Pakistan is second with 11 series), the manner in which it ended was deeply embarrassing.

3. No. 1 Top-Ranked India Defeated by Low-Ranked Ireland

India holds the top spot in the ICC T20 rankings, whereas Ireland is not even in the top 10. India boasts the world's number 1 and number 2-ranked batsmen, while no Irish batsman features in the top 50. Despite this disparity, the world champions suffered a clean sweep.

4. India's First T20I Series Whitewash in 7 Years

After losing a home series against Australia in 2019, this marks the first time in seven years that a team has clean-swept (whitewashed) India in a T20 series. This is only the fourth instance in T20 history where the Indian team has suffered a clean sweep.

5. Shreyas Iyer Joins Rishabh Pant in Unwanted Captaincy Record

Shreyas Iyer has become the second Indian captain in T20 history, following Rishabh Pant, to lose both of his first two matches at the helm.

6. Only the Third T20I Series Defeat for India This Decade

This marks India's third T20 series defeat of the current decade (since 2020). Prior to Shreyas Iyer, India had lost T20 series under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan (2021) and Hardik Pandya (2023).

7. Indian Captains with Zero Wins in a T20I Series

Shreyas Iyer has become the third captain in Indian cricket history under whose leadership the team failed to win a single match in a T20 series. Before him, this unwanted record was held by MS Dhoni (2009 and 2015) and Virat Kohli (2019).

8. Abhishek Sharma Equals Record for Most T20 Ducks in a Calendar Year

The year 2026 is proving to be a nightmare for young batter Abhishek Sharma. He was dismissed for a duck (0) for the ninth time this year. With this, he has jointly become the player with the most ducks in T20s within a single calendar year, equalling the records held by Rashid Khan (2019) and Shadab Khan (2024).

9. Tilak Varma Registers 6th Slowest T20I Fifty for India

In the second T20 match, Tilak Varma completed his half-century off 46 balls. This marks the sixth-slowest half-century scored by an Indian batter in T20 Internationals. (KL Rahul tops this list, having scored a fifty off 56 balls against South Africa in 2022).

10. India's First Back-to-Back T20I Defeats Since August 2023

The last time the Indian team lost two consecutive T20 matches was against the West Indies in August 2023. India had performed brilliantly since then, but by losing two consecutive matches against Ireland, the team has repeated that same old story.
