The players of the Indian team came to the field in Rajkot on Saturday with black bands on their hands. BCCI revealed that Indian players have worn black armbands in honor of former captain Dattajirao Gaikwad who passed away a few days ago.

95 year old Dattajirao Gaikwad passed away recently. Anshuman Gaekwad's father Dattajirao represented India in 11 Tests between 1952 and 1961. He was also the captain of the Indian team in four matches in the series against England. Right-handed batsman Dattajirao scored 350 runs at an average of 18.42.

Dattajirao Gaekwad is known for his excellent defense and driving, but he also made a name for himself as a brilliant fielder. Gaikwad made his debut in 1952 under the captaincy of Vijay Hazare. This was India's first tour of England after independence.

Dattajirao Gaikwad Cricket Career

Dattajirao Gaikwad started his career as an opener, but then he settled in the middle order. He played his last international match in 1961 against Pakistan in Chennai. Gaikwad was the life of Baroda in Ranji Trophy. He represented Baroda from 1947 to 1961. Gaikwad scored 5788 runs in first class cricket with the help of 17 centuries.

It was under the leadership of Dattajirao Gaekwad that Baroda won the title of 1957-58 Ranji Trophy season. Then Baroda defeated Services in the final. After the death of Deepak Shodhan at the age of 87 in 2016, Dattajirao Gaikwad became the oldest living Test cricketer in the country.

Chinglet Gopinath became India's oldest living cricketer. Gopinath of Chennai is 93 years old. Gaikwad breathed his last at his residence in Baroda. Gaikwad initially played cricket for Bombay University and then started playing at Maharaja Sayaji University of Baroda.
