In a surprising development, West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder has abruptly retired from ODI cricket. The former captain had been in excellent form over the past two years, particularly in T20 cricket. Although the Caribbean region is known for producing fast-bowling all-rounders, replacing Holder will be a challenging task for the two-time champions.

However, Cricket West Indies had already decided to move on from Holder in the 50-over format, as he had played his last ODI match during the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers.

Darren Sammy made the shocking announcement of Jason Holder's retirement from ODIs

Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Podcast, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy addressed Jason Holder's quiet retirement from ODI cricket. While sharing the news of his retirement, the West Indies coach also noted that the all-rounder remains a contender for a spot in the Test team.

Daren Sammy said on the Wisden Cricket Podcast, Jason [Holder] is still a contender for Test cricket. I know he has retired from ODI cricket. He will certainly retire from Test cricket [at some point] as well. He has spoken about his interests, and obviously, he is a key all-rounder for us.

Jason Holder played 138 matches for the West Indies in this format, scoring 2,237 runs (including 12 half-centuries) and taking 159 wickets. He made his ODI debut in 2013 and played a key role in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups. After the West Indies failed to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in India, the all-rounder played a significant part in the World Cup Qualifiers, where he scored 144 runs and took six wickets; ultimately, this proved to be the Barbadian's final match in the format.

Jason Holder Cricket Career

Jason Holder was one of the standout performers for the West Indies—and indeed among all teams—during the 2026 T20 World Cup. He scored 141 runs at a strike rate of 175 and claimed 10 wickets, turning the tide of matches on several occasions. Since then, the pace-bowling all-rounder has played two T20 Internationals against Sri Lanka but has not featured in Test matches since August two years ago, citing his recent form as the reason for his absence from the format. In September 2025, he expressed his desire to play Test cricket for the West Indies. To date, the former Test captain has played 69 Test matches for the national team, scoring 3,073 runs and taking 162 wickets. After Sir Garfield Sobers, he is the only West Indies cricketer to have achieved the milestone of scoring over 3,000 runs and taking more than 150 wickets in Test cricket.
