USA Vs Mexico April 20th Predictions

USA Vs Mexico, Wednesday April 19th, Source: NBC

On April 20th, fans will be treated to another iteration of “USMNT Vs Mexico” in an international friendly at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale Arizona. The rivalry is a longstanding one with the first match against one another being held in 1934, meeting 74 times since. Mexico holds the lead in the series with 36 wins, while USA have 22, with 16 draws. Mexico has almost double the goals that the US have scored also, with 144 to 86.

Today we’re going to be delving into the next meeting and determine how we think this one will go. It’s worth noting that, even with the statistics above, since 2000 the USMNT actually does hold the edge, winning 17 games to Mexico's 9 and 7 draws. In the last 3 games in fact, one has been a 0-0 draw and the other 2 both go to the USA, one being a 1-0 win and the other being a 2-0 win. So how will this one go? Can the States carry on a good streak or will Mexico bounce back?

Team Previews

Before we preview the game however let’s take a look at the teams first, starting with a look at the US men's team. In recent news regarding the US Men's team, they could be looking at a new striker joining the ranks as Arsenal loanee Folarin Balogun, who is currently playing in France for Reims and has 18 goals in 29 appearances for the club, has begun holding talks with the board for US Soccer to register his interest for representing the US at a senior level. Folarin was born in Brooklyn, New York but joined Arsenal at the age of 8 and has since represented both England and the US at a youth level. He played 4 times for the US U18s scoring 2 goals and has represented England from U17 to U21, scoring 7 goals in 13 games for the U21s. Would he realistically get a chance in the England squad over the likes of Rashford, Vardy, Kane?

Player News

Injury news now and it could be a big loss for the USMNT as Tyler Adams is set for a lengthy spell out after picking up a Hamstring injury during Leeds game against Wolves in March. Adams has been quite important for the national side, given his versatility. With his primary role as a midfielder complemented by his ability to also play as a full back or a center back. Though, often his lack of pace in the wide positions could be considered a bit of a hindrance, he can more than hold his own at CDM or CB. He will prove to be a big miss for the US as they look to continue their streak against Mexico.

Now it’s time to talk about Mexico and one of the big headlines has been the potential return to the national side for Javier ‘Chicarito’ Hernandez. The former Manchester United striker has been on fire since moving to the states in 2020, scoring 37 goals in 66 appearances for LA Galaxy. It has been confirmed that Chicarito has spoken with Diego Cocca, the new El Tri manager and Cocca has stated that the door will always be open for a possible return. Could we see a forward line of Chicarito and Raúl Jiménez in the April friendly or will that remain a rumour for the time being?

Julion Araujo

Julian Araijo has made his move to Barca but after complications currently finds himself with Barca B. Blaugrana will be expecting big things from him,

One player fans will be looking forward to seeing more of is the 21 year old full back Julián Araujo. Araujo is currently playing for Barcelona B after some paperwork issues caused a problem with his transfer from LA Galaxy. Interestingly, Araujo has already played for the United States, while it was only once, he did spend his entire youth career with the states, starting at U16s up to U23s. He made his USMNT debut against El Salvador in 2020 before making the switch to Mexico where he made his debut against Chile in 2021. At 21 years old people are expecting big things from the young right back. Will he live up to expectations?

Match Prediction

For me, I do think the US men's team are looking particularly good right now and their roster is full of young blood. While it’s true that football or “soccer” isn’t as popular as other sports in the states, it has been steadily growing with more money being put into the system to improve the national side. Mexico on the other hand have an aging squad and aside from a few youngsters who haven’t particularly proven themselves at the top level just yet, I feel like we should be expecting the same Mexico that we have seen for a while now and as such they’ll be on the losing side of this International friendly.

Betting Odds and Analysis

Now we’ve taken a look at both teams, it's time to take a look at the odds for the match. We're just 8 days away from the game, even as a friendly, it’s held in high regard by US and Mexico fans alike, both sets of fans wanting the bragging rights. We’ve taken a look around the internet at all of the best sports betting sites to see what the experts are offering for this one and here are the best odds we could find.

To begin with it seems like the experts believe the same as us, that the US edge this one, but the odds are fairly close, as if there isn’t particularly a true favorite for this match. As such you can currently get the following odds on this game: USMNT comes in at +140, meaning a stake of $5 would return $12. On the other hand you can get Mexico at +210, a stake of $5 here returns $15.50 instead. Not too bad but it seems like we could be in for a close one!

If you want to break it down a little more, you could look at some other markets like, USA and both teams to score can be had at +500, returning $30, but if you think USA will get a shutout you could back that at +275 returning $18.75. On the other side you’ve got Mexico and both teams to score at +600 returning $35 and Mexico with a shutout at +350, returning $22.50. Finally, if you think this ends in a draw you can get a score-all draw at +350 returning $22.50 and a scoreless draw at +600 returning $35, all of the above returns are based on a stake of $5.

Closing Thoughts

That’s going to do it for this one! USA fans, Mexico fans, how do we think this one is going to go? Who do we think will make the difference? Will Raúl Jiménez be the one to grab this game by the scruff of the neck or will some of the young talent of USMNT be the defining force with the likes of Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic always performing above and beyond for the national side? Only one thing is for sure, we only have 2 weeks to wait and it’s going to be an exciting game and we’re definitely looking forward to this one! Until next time football fans, take care!
