SA20 2027 Retention List: The stage is set for the upcoming season of South Africa's explosive T20 league, the SA20. The tournament's fifth season will commence on January 17, 2027, and run until February 21, 2027. Ahead of this major tournament, all six franchises have officially announced their player retentions and pre-auction signings.

An auction to recruit players will be held on October 7. Before the auction, the Durban Super Giants and Paarl Royals have already finalized their full 19-player squads, whereas the remaining four teams still have vacant slots.

  • Australian Captain's Debut: Australia's T20 captain, Mitchell Marsh, will play in the SA20 for the first time. He has been signed by the three-time champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
  • Joe Root's Return: England's star batter Joe Root will once again be seen representing Paarl Royals.
  • Sam Curran's New Destination: England all-rounder Sam Curran, who was part of MI Cape Town for the last two seasons, will now play alongside Jos Buttler at Durban's Super Giants.
  • Star Players Switch Teams: All-rounder Will Jacks has left Pretoria Capitals to join MI Cape Town, while West Indies' Jason Holder has joined Joburg Super Kings.
  • Strong Top Order: Pretoria Capitals have bolstered their top order by adding Phil Salt and Matthew Short to their squad.

Several surprising decisions have been witnessed ahead of the auction scheduled for October 7.

  • Faf du Plessis: Joburg Super Kings have released Faf du Plessis, who captained the team for four seasons.
  • Jonny Bairstow: Sunrisers Eastern Cape have let go of England's aggressive wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow.
  • MI Cape Town's Big Decision: Cape Town has released major match-winners such as Trent Boult, Rassie van der Dussen, and Kieron Pollard.
  • Pretoria Capitals: The Capitals have dropped Shai Hope, Jamie Overton, Tymal Mills, and Will Smeed from their squad.
