Can Punjab Kings Team Still Qualify?: The excitement of IPL 2026 is at its peak, yet the troubles for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) show no signs of abating. In the 58th match of the season, played on Thursday (May 14) against the Mumbai Indians in Dharamshala, Punjab suffered a crushing 6-wicket defeat. This contest was filled with drama right up to the final moments, with first Mumbai and then Punjab appearing to dominate the match, but ultimately, the victory went to Mumbai.

Following this crushing last cricket match defeat, the playoff hopes of the Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings have suffered a major blow, and their qualification for the playoffs has now become extremely difficult. Let's examine the full mathematical scenario of the Points Table and see how Punjab can still secure a spot in the playoffs.

During the first half of IPL 2026, the Punjab Kings appeared to be on the easiest path to reaching the playoffs. In their initial 7 matches, the Punjab Kings were unbeaten; the team registered magnificent victories in 6 matches, while one match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was washed out due to rain. Given that strong position, it seemed likely that Punjab would not only qualify with ease but also finish among the top two teams.

However, the narrative took a complete turn thereafter. A streak of 5 consecutive defeats has completely disrupted the team's mathematical equation. This marks the first time since 2020 that the Punjab Kings have lost 5 consecutive matches. Due to this poor run of form, a serious threat of dropping out of the top four now looms over Shreyas Iyer and his team.

IPL 2026 Points Table: Current Standings of Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Thanks to their commanding performance in the first half of the tournament, the Punjab Kings are still, by some means, managing to stay alive in the race for the playoffs. Let's take a look at the team's current statistics:

  • Total Matches Played: 12
  • Won: 6
  • Lost: 5
  • Abandoned (No Result): 1 (Against Kolkata)
  • Total Points: 13
  • Net Run Rate (NRR): +0.355

Currently, with 13 points, PBKS holds the fourth position on the points table; however, maintaining this spot is not going to be easy for them at all.

The Punjab Kings now have only 2 matches remaining in the group stage. The team's next fixture is on Sunday (May 17) against the table-toppers, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), while their final match is scheduled for May 24 against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Based on the results of these two remaining matches, three main scenarios emerge for Punjab:

  • Scenario 1: Wins in Both Matches (Total 17 Points)

  • If the Punjab Kings win both of their remaining matches (against RCB and KKR), they will reach a total of 17 points. In this scenario, the team will easily qualify for the playoffs without having to rely on the results of any other team.

  • Scenario 2: 1 Win and 1 Loss (Total 15 Points)

  • If the Punjab Kings win one match and lose the other, they will finish with 15 points. This would mean that their qualification is no longer entirely in their own hands. They would have to depend on the results of other teams' matches as well as their own Net Run Rate (NRR).

  • Scenario 3: Defeat in Both Matches (Total 13 Points)

  • If the Punjab Kings lose both of their upcoming matches, they will be officially eliminated from the playoff race. In the history of the 10-team IPL, no team has ever managed to secure a spot in the top four with 13 points or fewer.
