Considered one of India's best wrestlers, Vinesh Phogat was born in 1994. Vinesh's uncle Mahavir Singh introduced Phogat and her sister Babita Phogat to wrestling at a very young age. Vinesh followed in the footsteps of her cousins Geeta and Babita, who lost their father when she was just 9 years old. Vinesh's uncle started teaching wrestling to both the sisters and both of them tried every possible way to learn the sport.
Vinesh Phogat won her first major international title at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She won the gold medal and had a great start to her career. She then reached the quarter-finals of the 2016 Rio Olympics, but failed to win a medal during that time. In 2018, she won gold at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.
After winning her first gold medal at the 2021 Asian Championships, she remained a part of the Tokyo Olympics. Then in the Commonwealth Games 2022, she won the gold medal for the third consecutive time.
