MS Dhoni Future in IPL 2027: Speculation regarding the future of former Indian captain and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stalwart Mahendra Singh Dhoni has intensified once again. It has recently become clear that Dhoni does not wish to play in the IPL as an 'Impact Player.' This development has further fueled uncertainty about his potential participation in IPL 2027. - Condition of Fielding for 20 Overs: Dhoni has clarified that if he continues to play, he will not take the field merely as an Impact Player but will do so only as a full-time wicketkeeper.
- On-Field Readiness: This implies that he would be required to field and keep wickets for the entire duration of the match spanning all 20 overs.
Dhoni has been grappling with injury and fitness issues for some time now. He did not play a single match in IPL 2026, sparking constant speculation about his retirement and whether he would play the following season.
Badrinath Reveals Strategic Benefit for CSK

Former CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath spoke about a conversation he had with Dhoni on his YouTube channel.
"Dhoni himself told me that he wouldn't play as an 'Impact Player.' He sees himself playing as a full-time wicketkeeper, which means he would have to be on the field for the entire 20 overs. So, it is certain he won't step in as an Impact Player, though doing so would have been strategically beneficial for CSK." - Subramaniam Badrinath
According to Badrinath, former CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had also acknowledged that it would be difficult for Dhoni to remain physically active on the field for extended periods. Typically, he comes out to bat only after the 16th over while also performing wicketkeeping duties. Given his limited on-field involvement, playing as an Impact Player would have been the ideal scenario for both his body and the team.

Impact Player Rule vs Workload Management
The Impact Player rule could have significantly reduced Dhoni's workload. It would have allowed CSK to fully leverage his vast experience and finishing prowess without placing excessive strain on his knees or fitness.
However, due to Dhoni's insistence on playing as a wicketkeeper, the Chennai Super Kings franchise may now have to wait a little longer before deciding on his availability for next year's IPL.
