As IPL 2026 moves into its final phase with only two matches remaining, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has enforced a strict new anti-corruption rule. The use of smart glasses has been completely banned for players, support staff, and match officials following recommendations from the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

Smart Glasses Banned Over Potential Security Risks

The BCCI has raised concerns over the misuse of advanced wearable technology. Modern smart glasses are equipped with features that could compromise match security, including:

  • Internet access via mobile data and Wi-Fi
  • Audio and video calling functions
  • Messaging capabilities
  • Live streaming and recording options

Officials believe these features could be misused for unauthorized communication or covert recording inside restricted areas, posing a serious threat to the integrity of the game.

Strict Compliance Rules Issued by BCCI

In its official advisory to franchises, the BCCI has implemented clear and mandatory instructions:

  • Smart glasses must be deposited before entering the stadium on match days
  • Devices must be submitted along with mobile phones and smartwatches at security checkpoints
  • Smart glasses are officially classified as recording-capable devices under PMOA (Protected Match Officials Area) regulations
  • Entry with such devices into restricted zones is strictly prohibited

The board has also warned that any violation of these guidelines will lead to disciplinary action.

IPL 2026 Witnesses Multiple Protocol Breaches

This season has already seen several instances of rule violations, prompting stricter enforcement:

  • A Rajasthan Royals staff member, Romi Bhinder, was fined for using a mobile phone inside the dugout during a match
  • The BCCI has further tightened security by restricting visitors from entering players’ and support staff rooms

These incidents have reinforced the need for stronger monitoring and tighter control measures.

Final Word: Stronger Security for Fair Competition

With the tournament entering its decisive stage, the BCCI’s decision underscores its commitment to maintaining transparency and preventing any form of misconduct. The ban on smart glasses is part of a broader effort to safeguard the integrity and fairness of IPL 2026.
