Image: Game between KKR and RR could get postponed due to security issues
Kolkata Knight Riders' home game at the Eden Gardens on April 17 is in doubt. They are scheduled to play the Rajasthan Royals that day, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering either relocating the game or rescheduling it to another day. All parties, including the franchises, state associations, and broadcasters, have hinted about it.
The uncertainty is due to the Rama Navami festivities. This annual festival is celebrated fervently nationwide, and authorities are unsure if they can provide adequate security for the IPL game that night. Complicating matters further, the country is also undergoing a general election simultaneously. In light of these considerations, the BCCI is weighing the option of postponing the game.
The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and the CAB (Cricket Association of Bengal) are working closely with Kolkata police regarding potential scheduling changes for upcoming matches. While no final decisions have been reached, the BCCI is consulting the relevant franchises and broadcasters about the possible adjustments.
However, it is now faced with a situation where it may have to re-jig the schedule slightly. A top IPL official said, "The discussions are on with the police authorities, and we will take a decision soon."
KKR, with two wins in two games, are currently in Visakhapatnam, where they face the Delhi Capitals on April 3. Rajasthan Royals, also with two wins in as many games, are in Mumbai to face Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on Monday night.
