India has won the right to host the International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai in 2023. 75 members of IOC voted in favor of Mumbai’s candidature to host the IOC session in 2023. India will be hosting the IOC meeting after 40 years, for the first time since 1983. According to IOC member Nita Ambani, this win will be a significant development for India’s Olympic aspiration and will herald the start of a new era for Indian sport.

The Indian delegation comprising the countrys first individual Olympic gold medallist (Beijing 2008, shooting) Abhinav Bindra, IOC Member Nita Ambani, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra, and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur made the presentation to IOC members during the 139th IOC Session, being held alongside the ongoing Winter Olympics in Beijing.

“Its an honor to lead the Indian delegation today for hosting such a prestigious Olympic event, This will be a significant development for India’s Olympic aspiration and will herald the start of a new era for Indian sport," she added. Sport has always been a beacon of hope and inspiration for millions around the world. We are one of the youngest countries in the world today and I’m excited for the youth of India to embrace and experience first-hand the magic of the Olympics. It is our dream to strengthen this partnership further and host the Olympic Games in India in the years to come!" she added.

Following the announcement, Uddhav Thackeray, Chief Minister of Maharashtra took to Twitter to thank Mrs. Nita Ambani for her ‘efforts to bring the 2023 session to Mumbai,’ he wrote: Mumbai hosting the 2023 International Olympic Committee Session is not just a matter of great pride but also an opportunity to push India ahead on the sporting horizon.
