The Indian team has to play a limited overs series against Sri Lanka at the end of this month. The team can be announced anytime for this. Now the news is coming that Hardik will lead the team in the series against Sri Lanka starting July 27.
Hardik was playing the role of vice-captain of the Indian team in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Rohit had announced his retirement from T20 International after this tournament, after which the discussion intensified as to who would be the next captain of India in this format? A BCCI source told news agency PTI. Hardik was the vice-captain of T20 under Rohit's leadership. He is fully fit and is available for the three-match T20 series and Hardik will lead the team. But some news is coming for the ODI Series.
Regarding the ODI series, sources said that Hardik has sought leave and regular captain Rohit Sharma has been informed about this. The official said, 'Taking a break from ODIs is due to personal reasons. The kind of news going on in the media that Hardik has fitness problems, it is completely wrong.' Either KL Rahul or Shubman Gill can be made the captain in ODIs as Rohit will also not play in the series against Sri Lanka.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah had clarified that star players should also play domestic cricket when they are not playing for the national team. However, Rohit, Virat Kohli and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah have been exempted from this. The BCCI wants all Test specialist players to play at least one match of the Duleep Trophy before the series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. Sources said, this time there is no regional selection for the Duleep Trophy, only the national selection committee will select the team for the Duleep Trophy. All the contenders for the Test team will be selected. It will depend on Rohit, Virat and Bumrah whether they want to play or not.
If sources are to be believed, Hardik will be the captain in t20I, but there is no clarity yet about who will be the vice-captain. The names of Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav are being discussed for this. Shubman recently led the Indian team in the five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe where India managed to win 4-1. On the other hand, Suryakumar captained the T20 series against South Africa last year.
