Cricket fans get to see thrilling matches one after the other in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 18th season of the league is going to start from March 22, where fans are again expecting a thrilling match. Super overs have also been played many times in the IPL so far.

Super overs are played when the scores of both teams are equal. In such a situation, one over is played under the super over to get the result of the match. But there have been some changes in the rules of super over for IPL 2025.

Super Over Rules in IPL 2025

Let us tell you that, till the year 2019, only one Super Over used to be played if the match was tied. If the Super Over was also tied, then the team that hit more boundaries (fours-sixes) in the entire match was declared the winner, but now the Super Over is conducted till the result of the match is out. However, BCCI has fixed a time limit for the Super Over matches that are held repeatedly. If the 20-20 overs match ends in a tie, then a total of 1 hour is given for the super over in IPL.

60 minutes rule for Super Over in IPL 2025

How many Super Overs can be played in an IPL match?: This means that, Super Overs can be played to decide the winner up to one hour after the completion of the main match. But if the Super Overs are tied repeatedly, then the umpires can stop the match after one hour. According to the rule, if the match referee feels that the 1 hour period is going to be violated, then he will inform the captains about which will be the last Super Over. If the result is not decided even in the last Super Over, then the match will be ended on a draw and the points will be divided between the two teams.

When is the Super Over played

If the scores of both the teams are tied, then the match is decided in the Super Over. In this, three batsmen get a chance to bat. If two batsmen are out, then the Super Over is considered over there. The first Super Over of IPL was played in 2009. This match was played between KKR and Rajasthan Royals. Both the teams scored 150 runs. Rajasthan won this match in the Super Over.

These things are kept in mind in the Super Over

In the Super Over, the bowling team chooses from which end it will bowl and the pitch remains the same as the one in the match. However, the ground authority and IPL match referee can also decide to change the pitch. Apart from this, the umpires will stand at the same end where they ended the match. At the same time, the bowling captain also gets a chance to choose the ball from the ball box and the same ball is used in all the Super Overs. On the other hand, there is also a gap of only 5 minutes between two Super Overs. Apart from all this, if the Super Over or the subsequent Super Overs are cancelled before the end for any reason, then the match is declared a tie.
