Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara spoke about spinner Muttiah Muralitharan taking 800 wickets in Tests. Murali needed eight more wickets to reach the mark of 800 Test wickets but Muralitharan refused to let the management play the entire match.
Sangakkara said that when I first started, I used to watch Murali bowling for 1-2 hours in the nets and the coach used to hold the ball and say why are you bowling so much, save it for a few matches.

Muralitharan needed eight more wickets to reach 800 Test wickets under the captaincy of Kumar Sangakkara, but Muralitharan had made it clear to the management that he would give it all in his final match. but he will not play the match for this achievement.
Sangakkara recalled that I was the captain and I told him You need 8 wickets and we want you to get 8 wickets. If you play and you don't get wickets, it okay you can take a break. and then can come back
Murali said I have challenged myself to get 8 wickets in this one match. It is not about 800 wickets. If I get those 8 wickets, we will win. is more important. It doesn't matter if I don't get 8 wickets. This was the nobility of that man. Muralitharan is still at the top of the list of Test wicket-takers.
