But Ganguly's career really took off in the year 1996 and what happened in the next 4 years was very important in Ganguly's career. In the year 2021, Virat Kohli left the captaincy of the T20 format in November 2021 after the T20 World Cup. Although Virat Kohli wanted to remain the captain in ODI and Test cricket, the BCCI did not approve of having different captains for ODI and T20. In December 2021, suddenly the news came that Virat Kohli has been removed from the ODI captaincy by the BCCI and Rohit Sharma has been chosen as the new ODI and T20 captain. Virat Kohli was deeply hurt by this. Virat Kohli then had a dispute with the then BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and the then Chief Selector Chetan Sharma regarding the captaincy. The pain of being removed from the ODI captaincy has remained in Virat Kohli's mind for a long time. In January 2022, Virat Kohli also left the Test captaincy after losing the Test series 1-2 against South Africa. Sourav Ganguly is considered responsible for this incident.

2. Removing the T-shirt and waving it at Lord's

Lord's Cricket Ground in London, known as the Mecca of cricket, is known for its traditions. Many traditions of this ground are still prevalent, which do not change even for the Prime Minister of Britain. One of these traditions is to dress well, but in the year 2002, during the final of the NatWest Trophy on this very ground, as soon as the brilliant innings of Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif helped the Indian team achieve the target of 326 runs, which was considered impossible at that time, and win the title, Ganguly took off his T-shirt on the balcony of Lord's and started waving it in the air. For a long time, this feat of his was followed by the youth as a trend to celebrate victory. Although English newspapers criticized him a lot for this and many senior cricketers in Indian cricket also termed it wrong, but Ganguly did not care about anyone.

3. Sourav Ganguly banned

Sourav Ganguly is very irritated by the wrong decisions taken by the umpires during the game. He does not hide this anger. If any of his decisions go wrong, he does not hesitate to vent his anger on himself. In such a situation, his clash over wrong decisions taken by the umpires cannot be called a big deal. He can be seen questioning the umpire about the decisions on the field even today in the video recordings of old matches. In the year 1998, a match was going on in Bangalore against the Australian team that had come on a tour to India.

During this match, the umpire had given him out wrongly, so he expressed his anger on the pitch itself. For this, he was also banned for one match. Similarly, in the year 2000, during the match against Zimbabwe, he was banned for threatening the umpires. In the year 2001, against Sri Lanka, when the umpire gave him LBW, he turned his bat upside down in anger. For this he had to face a lot of criticism and he was again banned for one match. However, the umpire's decision was proved wrong in the video replay.

Another allegation against Sourav Ganguly was that he used to reach the ground late on purpose and the opposition captains had to wait for that long for the toss. Ganguly used to do this to create mental pressure on the opposition captains. Especially Australian captain Steve Waugh had accused Ganguly of this. Steve had written in his autobiography that during the 2001 tour of India, he had to wait for Sourav for the toss at least 7 times. During IPL 2008, as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, Ganguly had made Rajasthan Royals captain Shane Warne wait in the same way, and Warne had got angry with him on the field itself.

5. Controversy over removal from KKR captaincy

When the 2008 season of the Indian Premier League started, the BCCI had instructed all the franchises to choose star cricketers of Team India as their icon players. Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan, after taking the Kolkata franchise, chose Sourav Ganguly as the icon and captain of his team as he was a local player. But due to the arbitrary nature of both Shahrukh and Ganguly and the KKR team not performing very well, there was a rift between the two. Before IPL 2011, Shahrukh removed Ganguly from the team and handed over the captaincy to Gautam Gambhir. This caused a lot of uproar in Kolkata and when Ganguly played against KKR in Kolkata for another team, more than half the spectators in the stadium were supporting him.
