BIRMINGHAM: On Saturday, Mirabai was Mirabai’s biggest competition.
It must have felt slightly strange for Mirabai Chanu, bossing the weightlifting area with nobody to challenge her. Such a different scenario from the events of the Tokyo Olympics last year, when the Chinese Hou Zhihu was lifting weights as if they were shopping bags, pushing our diminutive Manipur girl to come up with her own special in an epic 49-kg lift-off. Then it got her a terrific silver, setting the stage for a memorable Indian Olympic medal windfall.
In Birmingham, you could say, she was on her own. Lifting a whopping 29 kg more than the second-placed Marie Hanitra Ranaivosoa of Mauritius. Mirabai lifted a total of 201 kg – 88 kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk – to create a new CWG record as well as her own personal best.
India's first gold in CWG 2022
This is India's first gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2022. With this, India now has a total of 3 medals. All these three medals have come in weightlifting only. Before Mirabai, Sanket Mahadev won the silver and Gururaj Pujari won the bronze medal for India. Mauritius' Meri Hanitra Roylya Ranivosoa finished second behind Mirabai Chanu by lifting a total of 172kg, while Canada's Hanna Kaminski won the bronze with a lift of 171kg. Chanu broke Commonwealth Championship and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch category. He also set new records in clean and jerk and total weight.
