Issuing a statement on the matter, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board said, "Keeping in view the seriousness of the rules violated by Karunaratne, the inquiry panel in its report has asked the Executive Committee of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board to issue him a stern warning." And has recommended a punishment that will not have much impact on his career. This has been done so that he does not violate the rules for the second time.
Sri Lanka Cricket would like to inform that a three-member inquiry panel has conducted a disciplinary inquiry into the alleged breach of multiple clauses in the Player Agreement by Chamika Karunaratne, a nationally contracted player, during the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Mr. Karunaratne has pleaded guilty to all the charges against him.
Taking into account the seriousness of the breaches committed by Mr. Karunaratne, the Inquiry Panel vide its report recommended to the Executive Committee of the SLC that the player be severely warned to desist from further breaches and be punished in a manner commensurate with his There should be no effect on cricket career. Following the said findings and recommendations of the Inquiry Panel, the Executive Committee of the SLC has imposed a one-year ban on Karunaratne from participating in all forms of cricket, and the said ban shall be suspended for a period of one year. In addition to the above-suspended sentence, a fine of Rs 4 lakh has also been imposed on Mr. Karunaratne.
