The 17th edition of IPL can start from March 22 and continue till May 26. Just 5 days after this, the T-20 World Cup will start in West Indies and America from June 1. India has not been able to win this tournament for 17 years, the team's only success was in 2007.
Team India played the World Cup thrice right after the IPL final and each time the team could not even cross the group stage. This time too, all the players included in Team India's T-20 squad will be busy in IPL. In such a situation, everyone will get very little time to prepare together.
The official schedule of the 17th season of IPL has not been announced yet due to the dates of Lok Sabha elections. The issue of security of IPL players remains heated during the Lok Sabha elections. Therefore BCCI has not released the schedule yet.
According to the report of Cricbuzz, BCCI has decided the dates of IPL. The tournament will start from March 22 and continue till May 26. As soon as the election dates are revealed, the IPL dates will also be made official. The defending champion of the tournament is Chennai Super Kings.
If the IPL final is held on 26th May, then the T-20 World Cup will also start after 5 days. However, Team India's first match will be held after 9 days on 5th November. But the players will still get very little time to practice together for the tournament.
T-20 World Cup has been played 8 times so far. Three of these times the tournament started within 20 days of the IPL final, all three times Team India could not even cross the group stage. Apart from this, the team reached the knockout stage 4 times out of 5. The team exited the semi-finals twice, finished runner-up once and also became champion once. In 2012, despite the tournament being held 3 months after the IPL, Team India could not qualify for the semi-finals. The team won its only title in 2007 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. IPL had not started till then.
Even before the IPL, the cricket boards of all the countries have said that their players will be available to play the tournament till the finals. In such a situation, the players of the rest of the team will also get less time to prepare together. However, players of the teams that did not reach the playoffs can definitely join the national team before May 26.
Before IPL, there will also be a Women's Premier League (WPL) for women players. According to media reports, the tournament may run from 22 February to 17 March. There are possibilities of IPL also starting after 5 days. The official schedule of WPL can be announced this week.
All the matches of WPL will be held in 2 cities of Bengaluru and Delhi but in IPL all the matches will be held in 10 different stadiums of 10 teams. Mumbai Indians is the defending champion of WPL.
