BCCI ready for split captaincy? Hardik will be the new captain, Know the whole matter

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCCI) has sacked the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee. This decision has been taken regarding the poor performance of Team India in the last few tournaments. Now BCCI has also invited applications for the new selection committee. Along with this, the board has also clearly said that whoever will be the new selection committee will have to choose its captain in all three formats. This clearly means that BCCI is now moving towards split captaincy.

Split captaincy for the first time since 2017

Hardik will be the new captain, If this happens then for the first time after Mahendra Singh Dhoni-Virat Kohli, the tour of split captaincy will come. In early 2017, Dhoni resigned from the captaincy of ODI-T20 i.e. limited over cricket. At that time, Kohli in Test and Dhoni in limited overs were the captains of Team India. This went on from December 2014 to 2017. Dhoni retired from Tests in December 2014. Then split captaincy was used in Indian cricket after a long time. From 2017 to 2021, Virat Kohli was the captain of Team India in all three formats. Then after Kohli, Rohit became the captain in all three formats.

Split captaincy was also used in 2007-08

Prior to 2014, that is, from 2008 till leaving the Test captaincy, Dhoni was the captain of Team India in all three formats. There was also a time in 2007 and 2008 when split captaincy was used. Dhoni was the captain of limited overs and Anil Kumble was captaining in Tests. After Kumbles retirement in 2008, the responsibility of captaincy was completely handed over to Dhoni. Now split captaincy is going to be used again. Hardik Pandya T20 and Rohit Sharma can be entrusted with the responsibility of captaincy in ODIs and Tests.

Rohit Sharma

The BCCI will not take the risk of removing Rohit from the ODI captaincy before the 2023 World Cup. In such a situation, only Rohit can remain the captain in this format till the 2023 ODI World Cup to be held in India. At the same time, Rohit has captained well in Tests so far. In such a situation, he can be continued as captain in that format as well. At the same time, in T20, Hardik can be preferred over KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant and can be made the captain.

Hardik Pandya can become the new captain in T20

Hardik took a break after a poor performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup and then made a spectacular comeback in the IPL. He made his team Gujarat Titans the champion in the very first season. Apart from this, he has also captained the youth team on the tour of Ireland. In such a situation, looking at the Mission 2024 T20 World Cup, Hardik can be given the freedom to make his team completely.

According to sources, the BCCI is in touch with Rohit regarding his captaincy in all three formats and may find a solution soon. Also it will be interesting to see who is made Rohits deputy. This means whom BCCI is looking at as captain after Rohit in ODIs and Tests. At present, the BCCI has sought applications from former players for the new national selection committee. There are five posts in the selection committee. It is certain that there is going to be a big change in Indian cricket in the coming times.
