India put up an impressive fight at the Asian Women’s Handball Championship 2024, securing a respectable sixth-place finish. In their final playoff match held at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Arena, they faced a tough challenge against China, ultimately falling short with a 41-30 defeat. Trailing 12-9 at halftime, Japan mounted a brilliant comeback to edge out the defending champions 25-24, claiming their second championship title and breaking South Korea’s streak of seven consecutive wins. Kazakhstan also celebrated success, earning their second-ever bronze medal with a 28-22 triumph over Iran in the third-place playoff.
Hosting the event for the first time, India saw standout performances from players like Bhawana Sharma and goalkeeper Nina Shil. Reflecting on the campaign, team member Menika expressed pride in playing on home soil but acknowledged the need to work harder for a medal. As the championship wrapped up, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, and Iran secured qualifications for the IHF World Women’s Handball Championship 2025, marking the end of a memorable 20th edition of the tournament.
