One of the most important turning points in Chirag's career was his partnership with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy.
Before joining forces with Satwik, Chirag played men's doubles with Arjun M. R. The two competed together in several junior tournaments and developed their skills as a promising Indian combination.
However, Malaysian coach Tan Kim Her recognised the potential of pairing Chirag with Satwik. Both players possessed impressive physical attributes, powerful attacking abilities and the reach required to compete against leading international doubles combinations.
The pairing was initially not welcomed enthusiastically by the players, but the coach's decision eventually proved successful.
Their contrasting strengths helped create an effective combination. Chirag became particularly important in attacking situations and backcourt play, while Satwik's power and physical presence added another dimension to their game.
Over time, the partnership developed into one of the strongest men's doubles combinations in international badminton. They also became the first Indian men's doubles pair to reach the top of the BWF world rankings.

The pair also reached the French Open final that year but finished as runners-up after losing to Indonesia's Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.
These performances established their ability to challenge some of the strongest doubles combinations in the world.

The Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021 after being postponed from 2020, provided Chirag and Satwik with their first Olympic experience.
The Indian pair competed in the men's doubles event but failed to progress beyond the group stage.
However, they produced a notable performance by defeating eventual Olympic champions Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Chinese Taipei during the group stage.
Although the tournament ended earlier than expected, the experience helped the duo understand the demands of competing at the highest level of international badminton.
2022: Thomas Cup Glory and Multiple Major Titles
2022 was arguably one of the most defining years of Chirag Shetty's career.
He and Satwik began the season by winning the India Open and later became part of the Indian team that secured its first-ever Thomas Cup title in Bangkok, Thailand.
Their contribution in the final against Indonesia was particularly important. After losing the opening game against Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Mohammad Ahsan, the Indian pair fought back to win the match 18–21, 23–21, 21–19.
The victory helped India secure a historic 2–0 lead in the final and eventually win the Thomas Cup for the first time.
The pair continued their impressive run at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, winning the men's doubles gold medal by defeating England's Ben Lane and Sean Vendy.

2023: World No. 1 Ranking and Asian Games Gold
The year 2023 took Chirag and Satwik's partnership to another level.
They won the Swiss Open before capturing the Badminton Asia Championships title in Dubai. Their victory over Malaysia's Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi in the final made them Asian champions.
One of their biggest achievements arrived at the Indonesia Open. The Indian duo defeated Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to win their first BWF World Tour Super 1000 title, becoming the first Indian men's doubles pair to achieve the feat.
They followed this success with a Korea Open victory.
In October 2023, Chirag and Satwik reached the No. 1 position in the BWF men's doubles world rankings. This was a historic moment for Indian badminton, as no Indian men's doubles combination had previously reached the top spot.
The pair also won the men's doubles gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games, which were held in Hangzhou in 2023. They defeated South Korea's Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho in the final.
Their achievements made them one of the most successful Indian badminton partnerships of their generation.
2024: French Open and Thailand Open Success
Chirag and Satwik continued their strong performances in 2024, reaching the finals of the Malaysia Open and India Open.
Although they finished as runners-up in both competitions, they returned to winning form at the French Open Super 750 tournament.
They defeated Chinese Taipei's Lee Jhe-huei and Yang Po-hsuan in straight games to secure the title.
The pair also won the Thailand Open, adding another international trophy to their growing collection.
However, their campaign also included difficult results, including an early exit at the Singapore Open.
2025: World Championships Bronze and Coaching Changes
In 2025, Chirag and Satwik continued competing against the world's strongest men's doubles combinations.
They reached the semi-finals of the Malaysia Open and India Open. At the BWF World Championships in Paris, they secured another bronze medal, defeating several challenging opponents during their campaign.
The medal was their second men's doubles bronze at the World Championships after their 2022 achievement.
Another important development was the return of Malaysian coach Tan Kim Her, who had originally identified and brought the pair together.
His return marked a reunion with the coach who played a major role in shaping their partnership.
2026: Singapore Open and China Masters Titles
Chirag's 2026 season has included important victories as well as challenging results.
Alongside Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, he won the Singapore Open Super 750 title, defeating Indonesia's Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in the final.
The pair also captured the China Masters Super 750 title in September 2026. They defeated China's He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu in the final after recovering from an opening-game defeat to win 11–21, 21–13, 21–17.
These victories demonstrated that the Indian combination remained capable of winning major international tournaments.
However, the season also brought disappointment. The duo suffered an early exit at the 2026 Asian Games men's doubles competition and subsequently lost in the opening round of the Denmark Open against He Jiting and Ren Xiangyu.
At the end of October 2026, the pair were ranked sixth in the men's doubles world rankings, according to the available ranking information.
