As Mumbai Indians (MI) prepare to host Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in the 45th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the evening will be about more than just cricket-related activities.

Sunday's encounter also marks the return of the franchise's signature tradition - Education and Sports for All (ESA) Day. The initiative highlights MI's continued commitment to empower underprivileged children through education and sports.

What is ESA Day?

ESA Day is a special initiative of Reliance Foundation, held under the program "Education and Sports for All". The day is dedicated to providing education and sports opportunities to children from underprivileged communities, increasing their motivation and encouraging them to realize their dreams. Reliance Foundation, led by Nita M. Ambani, celebrates this day with various fun and educational activities, such as sporting events, carnivals, and cultural programs, so that children have memorable experiences.

For example, on 22 December 2024, ESA Day was organized for about 1,000 underprivileged children at Jio Presents Hamleys Wonderland™ in Mumbai. During this, the children enjoyed fun rides, games, and learned about stories of Indian achievements under the "Story, Art, Happiness" campaign. Each child was also given a Vantara themed toy and educational material, which promotes animal welfare.

Similarly, under ESA Day, Reliance Foundation and Mumbai Indians celebrate an IPL match every year as ESA Day, where thousands of children, especially girls and children with special needs, are invited to watch the match at the Wankhede Stadium and cheer for their favourite cricketers. For example, on 7 April 2024, 18,000 children attended the Mumbai Indians match against Delhi Capitals.

Under Reliance Foundation's "We Care" philosophy, ESA Day aims to inspire children, spark their imagination and promote inclusive growth. The event began in 2010 and has impacted the lives of millions of children so far.

What is the purpose of ESA Day?

Launched as a dedicated match day in 2023, ESA Day is based on a cause that MI has been participating in since 2010. Over the years, the initiative has aimed to nurture talent, build confidence and provide opportunities to young individuals through sports and education. Ahead of the match between Mumbai Indians and LSG, Mrs Nita Ambani had a message for the Mumbai Indians players.

Performance of MI and LSG so far in the tournament

Mumbai Indians have made a strong comeback and won four matches in a row after a challenging start. With five wins and 10 points, they are currently fifth in the points table. On the other hand, LSG has also secured five wins and 10 points, but they are slightly behind due to a negative net run rate. Their performance has been up and down, but they are still in the playoff race. Both teams have the potential to make it to the playoffs, but consistency will be key in the upcoming matches.
