T20 World Cup 2024 Nassau County Executive Bruce A. Blackman, when asked about security, said that we are ready to deal with any kind of situation. This is a very big event for us. Two helicopters were constantly patrolling the sky during the match. The pro-ISIS group had threatened to target this T20 World Cup.
The Cricket World Cup is being held in the US for the first time, but the security arrangements here are unprecedented, unlike the world's biggest sporting events like the Olympics and the Football World Cup. Getting to the Nassau County Stadium in New York on match day is a tough task. Forget about the common fan, we had to sweat to reach our gate despite having a media parking pass ahead of the South Africa vs Sri Lanka match.
On Monday, before the match, when we reached near Eisenhower Park, the New York Police signaled us to go one way, so we thought we would reach easily, but after walking a few kilometers and about two kilometers before the stadium, three different policemen checked the same parking pass repeatedly. When we entered Eisenhower Park, after walking a little distance, the first police check post came in which media accreditation, car pass and bags were checked.
After that, at the second check post, the media pass, car pass and the taxi were checked again through a machine. The taxi dropped us at the parking lot and then we walked to the media gate where again the private security guard checked our cards and bags. Then we passed through the metal detector and after that all the journalists were asked to keep their bags aside. After this, the sniffer dog came and sniffed the bags. Then a policeman opened each chain of the bag and checked it. After this, the journalists could reach the media box.
The rest of the fans were also in the same situation. When Nassau County Executive Bruce A. Blackman was asked about this, he said that we are ready to deal with any kind of situation. This is a very big event for us. During the match, two helicopters were continuously patrolling the sky.
It is known that the Nassau County Police Department is keeping a close watch on the eight matches to be held on this ground between June 3-12 to ensure that these matches are completed without any incident. A big match between India and Pakistan is also to be held here on June 9. A pro-ISIS group had threatened to target this T20 World Cup.
According to sources, apart from snipers and SWAT teams, police officers in civil dress have also been deployed inside the grounds for these matches. Narcotics Division officers are monitoring all four drop-in pitches 24 hours a day. Nassau's police force has worked closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the US Department of Homeland Security, the New York Police Department and other agencies.
Strict rules have also been implemented near the ground to mitigate any potential threat of drone attacks on match days. Fans are being frisked before entering the stadium and have to pass through airport-style security scanners before entering the stadium.
