Two New Zealand cricketers have been dropped from the central contract. These players have taken the big decision to play in franchise cricket.
New Zealand's Finn Allen has opted out of the central contract to play in franchise cricket. At the same time, experienced batsman Devon Conway has also refused to be a part of the central contract. But he will be given a casual contract. Conway has declared himself available for all international matches except the white-ball matches against Sri Lanka in January. He is ready to play only in SA20. Finn Allen and Devon Conway were included in the list of central contracts only last month.
Devon Conway said that first of all I would like to thank New Zealand Cricket for their cooperation in this process. I have not taken the decision to withdraw from the central contract lightly, but I believe it is the best for me and the family at this time. Playing for the Black Caps is still the top priority for me and I am extremely excited to represent New Zealand and win games of international cricket.
I am happy to be part of the squad for the upcoming Test matches that are part of the World Test Championship and am excited to play in the Champions Trophy next year if I am selected. Conway has been included in the squad for the Test series against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka next month.
To be eligible for a central contract under New Zealand Cricket, players have to keep themselves available for domestic Super Smash tournaments when not playing international cricket. Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson also opted out of the central contract. On the other hand, Finn Allen has not even been given a contingent contract. Because he too has decided to decline the option of a central contract.
