Instagram has launched the Instants app for photo sharing
Instagram Launches the Instants App: To compete with Snapchat, Instagram has launched the Instants app. After testing it in select markets, it is now being rolled out globally. Much like Snapchat, photos viewed on this app will automatically disappear after 24 hours and cannot be viewed again. It can be accessed directly through the Instagram app or used as a standalone application. In other words, you can utilize Instants directly from within Instagram, or you can download and use the separate Instants app.
How Does the Instants App Work?
As mentioned above, in addition to being accessible via Instagram, the app can also be used as a standalone application. The app opens directly into the camera interface. From there, you can capture a photo and share it with your "Close Friends" list or with your followers. However, there are certain limitations associated with this feature.
Photos captured on Instants cannot be edited, nor can you upload photos from your device's gallery. After taking a photo, users are given only the option to add a caption. This offers an experience distinct from the heavily edited photos typically seen on Instagram, allowing users to share authentic, unedited images.
Screenshots Will Not Be Possible:
Photos sent via the Instants app will appear in the recipient's inbox. Recipients will have the option to respond with emojis, send text messages, or send back their own "Instant" photo. Instagram states that screenshots cannot be taken of photos sent through this app. Similarly, the screen recording feature has also been disabled. Furthermore, the app includes an "Undo" option, allowing users to retract a photo they have sent. This option remains available until the recipient opens and views the photo.
A New Attempt to Compete with Snapchat:
With the launch of the Instants app, Instagram is making a fresh attempt to compete with apps like Snapchat. Apps such as Snapchat, BeReal, and Locket Widget have become quite popular; all of these apps specialize in offering features for sharing ephemeral content. Now, through Instants, Instagram also aims to join this growing trend.
However, Instagram has also introduced some unique variations in how it implements this feature. For instance, shared Instants can be securely stored in a private archive for up to a year and subsequently utilized as "Story Recaps." Furthermore, Instagram has introduced several features designed to ensure the safety of teenagers, such as Family Center controls and shared screen time limits.
