The club has spent the majority of its existence in the top tier of Bulgarian football; it most recently competed in the top flight during the 2022–2023 season.
Spartak's nickname is "The Falcons," and the club shares a rivalry with another team from Varna, 'Cherno More Varna.' Matches between these two teams are known as the "Derby of Varna." Before the 'Yuri Gagarin Stadium' was demolished, both teams used to share it as their home ground.
