The club was founded on January 7, 1977, through the initiative of several local groups and the Chilean state-owned company CODELCO. It was established based on the legal identity of the local club 'Deportes El Loa.' On March 30, 2006, with the unanimous approval of its 56 members (*socios*), the club was transformed into a limited sports company. According to a 2023 public report, the club's capital stands at $7.534 billion CLP ($7,760,020.00 USD), divided into 1,100,000 shares with no nominal value. The majority of these shares are held by the club's members (*socios*). Following a special shareholders' meeting in 2013 (held on the second call), 1,099,999 shares were allocated to members and 2 shares to the club president; of the two shares held by the president, one is held in the capacity of club president and the other as the chairman of the corporation's board of directors. In 2024, the first team's budget was $77,900 million CLP.

The club made its professional debut in Chile's 'Segunda División Profesional' in 1977 and secured promotion to the 'Primera División' that same year. The club has won the 'Primera División' title eight times, and has also secured the 'Copa Polla Lan Chile' in 1986 and the 'Primera B de Chile' title in 2023. Its rivalries include the 'Clásico Albo-Loino' against Club Social y Deportivo Colo-Colo, the 'Clásico del Cobre' against Club de Deportes Cobresal, and the 'Clásico de la Región de Antofagasta' against Deportes Antofagasta.
