League of Ireland Mens Premier Division

The 'League of Ireland Men's Premier Division' (commonly referred to as the 'League of Ireland Premier Division' or simply the 'Premier Division') is a professional football league in the Republic of Ireland. It is the top division of the 'League of Ireland' and sits at the highest level of the Republic of Ireland's football league system. It is organized and managed by the 'Football Association of Ireland' (FAI). Contested by ten clubs, the league operates on a promotion and relegation system with the 'League of Ireland First Division'. The season typically runs from February to November, with each team playing 36 matches—four against every opponent: two at home and two away.

Launched following the restructuring of the 'League of Ireland' in 1985, the 'Premier Division' replaced the old single-division format as the country's top-flight league. 'Shamrock Rovers' won the first two Premier Division titles; by the end of the 2025 season, they held the record for 10 'League of Ireland Premier Division' titles and 22 Irish top-flight championships. The Northern Ireland-based club 'Derry City' has won the league twice; their participation makes it a cross-border competition. 'St Patrick's Athletic' and 'Bohemians' are currently the only 'League of Ireland' clubs that have never been relegated from the Premier Division. Due to sponsorship, the league has been known as the "SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division" since 2010, continuing a trend of naming-rights sponsorships that began in the early 1990s.

Driven by rising attendance, expanded TV and streaming coverage, and improved performances in European competitions, the Premier Division has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing domestic leagues within UEFA's mid-tier; total attendance increased by 20% between 2022 and 2023, with further growth in 2024 and 2025. The 2025 season marked the first year in which the league consisted entirely of full-time professional clubs and players.
