Asian Games 2026:India continued its dominance in the men's javelin throw at the 2026 Asian Games, once again securing two medals. Despite the absence of javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav ensured India's presence on the podium.
Yash Vir, a bronze medalist at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, won the silver medal with a personal best throw. Meanwhile, Rohit a silver medalist at the previous Asian Games clinched the bronze this time around. As expected, Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage won the gold medal.
The men's javelin throw event on September 28 was eagerly awaited, as everyone wanted to see how Indian athletes would perform in Neeraj Chopra's absence and whether they would make it to the podium. Neeraj had won the javelin gold medal at the previous two Asian Games.
He was missing this time, while the competition included Rumesh Pathirage and Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem both strong contenders for a medal. However, Yash Vir and Rohit did not disappoint; they secured two medals for India for the second consecutive Asian Games, even though the gold eluded them.
Impressive performances by Yash Veer and Rohit
After the initial three rounds of throws, both Indian stars held the top two positions. Rohit had moved into first place with a throw of 84.31 meters in the third round, having previously been in second place with an 83.56-meter throw in the first round.
Meanwhile, Rumesh had climbed to third place with a throw of 83.34 meters in the second round. At that stage, it seemed likely that either Yash Veer or Rohit might make history by winning the gold. However, Rumesh—who has emerged as the most formidable javelin thrower of the year—once again proved why he is currently the best.
Rumesh secured the top spot and clinched the gold with a throw of 88.33 meters in his fourth attempt. However, Yash Veer continued his impressive performance; he achieved a distance of 85.14 meters in his fifth throw and then secured the silver medal with a throw of 85.72 meters in his final attempt. This also marked a career-best throw for him. Meanwhile, Rohit won a medal at the Games for the second consecutive time.
Rumesh emerges champion; Arshad falters again
Meanwhile, Rumesh won the gold with a throw of 88.55 meters on his final attempt. In contrast, Pakistan's reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem failed to deliver once again.
Having struggled at the Commonwealth Games, Arshad faltered here as well; he could only manage a best throw of 80.29 meters, finishing in fourth place. However, this did mark his best performance of the season.
