Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Was Benched for AFG Series: 15-year-old batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi did not get a chance in the playing XI during the recently concluded three-match T20 International series against Afghanistan. Despite being named 'Player of the Series' against Zimbabwe and delivering a stellar performance in the Duleep Trophy, he had to remain on the bench throughout the series. Now, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has clarified the reason behind this. Gambhir stated that the young player must wait for his opportunity to break into the playing XI.

The team management preferred Sanju Samson over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the playing XI. Gambhir explained that his priority is to build the team combination with the T20 World Cup in mind. A player is not dropped simply for performing poorly in two or three matches. Sanju has been performing consistently well, which is why he was given preference.
Gambhir made it clear that there is no doubt about Vaibhav's immense talent. However, competition in Indian cricket is fierce, and whether a player is 15 or 30 years old, they have to wait for their turn. Gambhir expressed confidence that whenever Vaibhav gets an opportunity, he will remain with the team for the long haul.

Speaking about Sanju Samson, Gambhir remarked that Sanju has proven his immense potential. No player becomes the 'Player of the Tournament' at the T20 World Cup without talent. After a poor outing in the first match, Sanju made a magnificent comeback, scoring back-to-back half-centuries in the subsequent two matches.
Gambhir also acknowledged that giving Vaibhav Suryavanshi a chance over Sanju Samson during the England tour was the toughest decision of his coaching career. However, considering the preparations for the World Cup, Sanju will remain the team's first choice for now.
