John Campbell was the first to smash a century in Guwahati, followed by captain Shai Hope and then Amir Jangoo. This marks only the sixth time in ODI cricket history that three players from the same team have scored centuries in a single match.
When a hat-trick of centuries occurred
The feat of three batsmen from the same team scoring centuries in a single ODI match began in 2015. Three South African batsmen scored centuries against the West Indies; in that match, Hashim Amla, Rilee Rossouw, and AB de Villiers all reached the three-figure mark.
Subsequently, South Africa once again produced a remarkable performance against India in 2015. In the Mumbai ODI, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, and AB de Villiers all scored centuries.
In 2022, three England batsmen scored centuries in a single ODI against the Netherlands. Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, and Jos Buttler all reached the three-figure mark in that match.
In the 2023 World Cup, three South African batsmen scored centuries against Sri Lanka: Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram.
Last year, three Australian batsmen Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Cameron Green scored centuries in the ODI matches played against South Africa in Mackay. Now, West Indies batsmen have achieved a similar feat.
Shameful Record Against India
With this, an embarrassing record has been set against India. India is the first team in the world against whom three centuries have been scored in a single ODI match on two separate occasions.
Moreover, the West Indies also posted their highest-ever ODI score against India. This marks the first time the Windies have crossed the 350-run mark in an ODI against India.
