During an unofficial Test match against New Zealand A in Lincoln, Devdutt Padikkal came very close to a double century, but his innings was brought to an abrupt end by an umpire's decision. The left-handed batter was given out for 199, and his reaction to the call became a major talking point. With Padikkal just one run shy of the 200-run mark, Gibson bowled a delivery down the leg side; wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay took the catch, and New Zealand A appealed. Umpire Brad Wilson upheld the appeal, bringing an end to the India A batter's innings.

Reacting to the umpire's decision, Padikkal indicated that the ball had made contact with his bat. It appeared that the ball moved toward the leg side, brushed the bat, struck his pad, and then carried through to the wicketkeeper. The batter stood at the crease for a few moments before walking off the field, clearly disappointed. This dismissal brought an end to an innings that had placed India A in a strong position in the four-day match. The decision was all the more frustrating as Padikkal was on the verge of reaching a score of 200. However, based on the available footage and the batter's reaction, it is not entirely clear whether the umpire's decision was incorrect.

Thanks to Devdutt Padikkal's 199 runs, India A has taken a lead against New Zealand A

In the first unofficial Test played in Lincoln, Padikkal may have missed out on a double century, but his innings of 199 runs stood out as the highlight of India A’s batting performance. Bolstered by contributions from Sai Sudharsan, Yash Rathod, and Washington Sundar, the visiting side managed to post a substantial total. By the close of play on the third day, Sundar had reached his half-century and remained unbeaten on 51, while Akash Deep was yet to get off the mark.

At stumps, India A had reached 488 for 8, securing a lead of 284 runs over New Zealand A. Thanks to this impressive batting display, the visitors now find themselves in a commanding position, with Padikkal’s near-double-century innings serving as the standout moment of the match. While the team will certainly be pleased with such a significant lead, Padikkal’s dismissal at 199 runs will remain one of the most talked-about events of the day’s play.
