New Zealand has announced several changes to its squad for the remaining three matches of the five-match T20 International (T20I) series against India. The primary objective behind these changes is to manage the workload of the fast bowlers ahead of the upcoming five-match ODI series. Having secured four-wicket victories in each of the first two T20I matches played in Christchurch, India has taken a 2-0 lead in the series. New Zealand will now look to bounce back in the third match and keep its hopes of winning the series alive.
Lockie Ferguson to Miss Third T20I
New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson is heading to Auckland and will therefore miss the third T20I against India. However, he is expected to return to the squad for the fourth and fifth matches of the series. Matt Henry will remain in Christchurch to prepare for the upcoming ODI series; he will join the New Zealand ODI squad in Auckland on November 2.
Meanwhile, Kyle Jamieson will be available for the third T20I, which is set to be played in Wellington on October 27. Following this, he will play for Canterbury in the Ford Trophy before joining the national team for the ODI series.
Blair Tickner and Josh Clarkson have been included in the team
New Zealand has added Blair Tickner to their squad for the final three T20I matches. His inclusion provides the team with an additional fast-bowling option during a busy international schedule.
Josh Clarkson will be available for selection for the fourth and fifth T20I matches. Additionally, Matt Fisher will travel with the squad to Wellington as fast-bowling cover for the third match, after which he will return to the New Zealand 'A' side. These adjustments will help New Zealand manage the workload of their fast bowlers while maintaining sufficient depth in the squad.
Coach Rob Walter spoke about the changes
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter emphasized the importance of squad depth and workload management, given the team's busy schedule. He noted that the competitive start to the T20I series has presented several challenges, and there is still a significant amount of cricket left to be played. The team's objective is to ensure that their fast bowlers remain fully fit for the remaining T20I matches and the upcoming ODI series.
New Zealand’s updated T20I squad:
Mitchell Santner (C), Tim Seifert (WK), Finn Allen, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Bevan Jacobs, Michael Bracewell, Nathan Smith, Adam Milne, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson (for the 4th and 5th T20Is), Kyle Jamieson (for the 3rd T20I only), Matt Fisher (cover for the 3rd T20I), Blair Tickner (for the last 3 T20Is), Josh Clarkson (4th and 5th T20Is).
