However, following that brilliant start, the Knight Riders' middle order became hopelessly entangled in Washington Freedom's spin web. Indian-origin spinner Nikhil Chaudhary turned the tide of the match in his very first over by dismissing the set batsman Andre Fletcher (47 off 27 balls) and then bowling out the dangerous Andre Russell for a duck on the very next delivery. Pienaar smashed a towering six off the very first ball, not only taking the match's excitement to a fever pitch but also completing his maiden T20 half-century. Washington now required 8 runs off 5 balls.
Under immense pressure, Van Schalkwyk bounced back immediately, bowling a pinpoint yorker to clean bowl Pienaar (53 runs).
