Major League Cricket: Shah Rukh Khan's team, the Los Angeles Knight Riders, has won the title for the current season of Major League Cricket.
In the final match played in Auckland, the team defeated Washington Freedom off the very last ball, securing victory by a margin of one run.
With this win, the Los Angeles Knight Riders have become Major League Cricket champions for the first time. The team's title victory also saw three major records associated with them being broken.
Los Angeles Knight Riders Score 164 Runs
Batting first in the match, the Los Angeles Knight Riders were bowled out for 164 runs in 19.4 overs. Andre Fletcher was the top scorer for the team with 47 runs, while his opening partner Colin Munro scored 40 runs.
Apart from the duo, Matthew Tromp played an innings of 39 runs. Beyond these three, the remaining Los Angeles Knight Riders batsmen struggled to even reach double figures.
Washington Freedom Stumble in the Final Over
Chasing a target of 165 runs in 20 overs, Washington Freedom had reached 151 for 6 after 19 overs. They needed 14 runs to win off the final over with four wickets in hand.
Van Schalkwyk bowled the final over for Los Angeles Knight Riders. Washington Freedom's hopes of victory soared after a six was hit off the first ball, but the subsequent events turned the game around.
14 Runs Defended; Washington Freedom Lose on the Final Ball
Van Schalkwyk claimed two wickets in the next two deliveries, pushing Washington Freedom onto the back foot once again. However, a four off the fourth ball injected fresh excitement into the contest. A single was taken off the fifth ball, leaving them needing 3 runs to win off the final delivery.
It meant a single boundary would have ended Los Angeles Knight Riders' chances. But the exact opposite happened; Van Schalkwyk conceded only one run off the last ball. Washington Freedom's batters attempted to steal a second run to force a Super Over but were run out in the process.
3 records broken during Los Angeles Knight Riders' victory
Los Angeles Knight Riders won the match by 1 run, setting a new record for their narrowest victory in terms of runs in the MLC. Additionally, two other records were broken for the team.
Jason Holder has now become the player with the most catches (12) for Los Angeles Knight Riders, surpassing Rovman Powell's record. Meanwhile, Van Schalkwyk has overtaken Andre Russell to become the team's leading wicket-taker, with a total of 31 wickets.
