The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced its squad for the two-Test series against Pakistan, starting on August 6. Star all-rounder Sam Curran has missed out on a spot in the squad for the first two Tests as he is not fully fit. However, the selectors have stated that he could return to the team if he regains fitness by the third Test; had he been fully fit, he could have been included in the squad for the opening two matches as well.
Sam Curran could return for the third Test
According to England cricket selector Marcus North, Sam Curran could soon make a return to Test cricket. He has not yet been included in the squad for the matches against Pakistan as he is not fully fit, though his fitness is being monitored. Sam Curran made his Test debut at the age of 19 and played a total of 24 Test matches between 2018 and 2021.
However, he subsequently remained out of the Test team. For the past five years, his focus has largely been on white-ball cricket. Nevertheless, it is believed that he could be considered for the third Test match against Pakistan, which begins on September 9.
Sam Curran could replace Ben Stokes in the team
According to England selector Marcus North, the team's balance has been somewhat disrupted following Ben Stokes' retirement. Consequently, selectors are considering Sam Curran and view him as an excellent option. However, Curran has played a significant amount of cricket this season, placing considerable strain on his body.
Continuous play has led to minor injuries and physical issues—common occurrences for fast bowlers. He recently missed a match in 'The Hundred' tournament, leading the team management to believe that he is not yet fully fit.
Jacob Bethell Out of Pakistan Series
England has announced its squad for the first two matches of the upcoming three-match Test series against Pakistan. Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of the entire series due to a knee injury; consequently, Jordan Cox will get the opportunity to bat at number three.
Meanwhile, Dan Lawrence will be seen batting at number six. England's new head coach, Stephen Fleming, will not be able to travel with the team for the Pakistan series due to family reasons. Marcus Trescothick has been appointed as the interim coach in his place.
