PV Sindhu World Championship 2026: India’s star badminton player PV Sindhu has been knocked out of the 2026 World Championships after losing to China’s Wang Zhi Yi in a thrilling women’s singles Round of 16 clash. Wang defeated Sindhu 21-11, 15-21, 21-17 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.

PV Sindhu vs Wang Zhi Yi: India Star’s World Championship Run Ends

PV Sindhu entered the Round of 16 hoping to continue her campaign at the prestigious tournament. However, Wang Zhi Yi produced a strong performance to end the Indian shuttler’s journey in three games.

Sindhu struggled to find her rhythm in the opening game, allowing Wang to take control early. The Chinese player eventually won the first game 21-11 and put Sindhu under immediate pressure.

PV Sindhu Makes Strong Comeback in Second Game

Facing a must-win situation, Sindhu responded impressively in the second game. The Olympic medallist increased the intensity of her game and began putting Wang under pressure.

Sindhu’s efforts paid off as she won the second game 21-15, levelling the contest at 1-1 and forcing a deciding third game.

Wang Zhi Yi Stuns PV Sindhu in Deciding Game

The third game initially appeared to be going Sindhu’s way. She made a brilliant start and raced to a 3-0 lead before extending her advantage to 8-4.

Sindhu also held an 11-10 lead at the interval. However, Wang Zhi Yi produced a strong comeback after the break. She remained composed during the crucial stages and gradually turned the momentum in her favour.

Wang eventually closed out the deciding game 21-17, completing a memorable three-game victory and sending Sindhu out of the tournament.

PV Sindhu Suffers First-Ever World Championship Loss to Chinese Player

The defeat also created a significant record in Sindhu’s World Championship history. This was the first time PV Sindhu lost to a Chinese player at the World Championships.

Before this match, Sindhu had defeated Chinese opponents eight times at the tournament. Wang Zhi Yi has now become the first Chinese shuttler to beat the Indian star on the World Championship stage.

Wang Zhi Yi Reaches World Championship Quarter-Finals

With her victory over Sindhu, Wang Zhi Yi booked her place in the women’s singles quarter-finals. She will now face Denmark’s Line Christophersen in the last-eight clash.

Christophersen reached the quarter-finals after defeating Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani 21-18, 21-17 in her Round of 16 encounter.

The quarter-final will be another major test for Wang as she looks to continue her impressive run in the 2026 World Championships.
