Anger Costs Daniil Medvedev Dearly
The hard-court semifinal clash between the two giants had reached a thrilling juncture. Djokovic had already claimed the first set 7-5 and held a commanding 5-3 lead in the second.
Then, after a point concluded, the ball rebounded towards Medvedev; in a moment of frustration, he smashed it hard towards the stands at the back of the court. However, the ball struck a fan sitting in the front row near the eye, requiring immediate medical attention on the court before the fan was assisted out of the stands.
Following the incident, match officials consulted with Medvedev and made the tough decision to default him. Medvedev's disqualification brought the match to an abrupt end, sending Djokovic through to the China Open final.
Commenting on the incident, Novak Djokovic said, Honestly, it was a very shocking moment. I hope the fan didn't suffer any serious injury. At the same time, I feel terrible for Daniil. I am absolutely certain he didn't do it intentionally.
Djokovic's Unbeaten 33-0 Record
