IND vs NZ 1st ODINew Zealand has always held a special place for Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill. It was here that he won the Under-19 World Cup in 2018, and a year later, his ODI career also began on this very soil. Now, seven years later, the 27-year-old Gill has returned to lead Team India in the same country.

From the victory with the Under-19 team in Mount Maunganui to receiving his maiden ODI cap from MS Dhoni in Hamilton, memories of New Zealand still bring a smile to Shubman’s face today.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the series, he said, "We won the Under-19 World Cup here. I have some wonderful memories. I made my international debut in New Zealand. Whenever I come here, it feels great.

Gill Has Evolved

Shubman Gill is no longer the same player he once was. He is no longer just a young batter from Punjab striving to carve out a place for himself in international cricket; he has now become a team leader, spearheading India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Over the next 11 months, the team will compete for the most prestigious title in the 50-over format. These upcoming matches—beginning with the series against New Zealand—will provide the captain with an opportunity to find answers to the questions facing the Indian side.

World Cup Preparation and Team Balance

I believe that the more we play at different venues, the more experience we will gain, which will ultimately aid us in the World Cup," Gill stated. He added, "From the T20 series, we’ve observed that the new ball offers good bounce here, posing a challenge for both the bowling and batting sides.

Both teams will face significant challenges, and this will be a great test for us as well. Our bowling attack is young, but it possesses all the qualities needed to succeed here. Hopefully, we will learn and perform well.

Faith in Youth and Hopes for the Future

Shubman Gill echoed head coach Gautam Gambhir’s sentiments that an inexperienced bowling attack would present challenges especially given the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Prasidh Krishna. However, he views this situation as an opportunity for the young players to boost their confidence.

India’s options include Gurnoor Brar, Aquib Nabi, Anshul Kamboj, and Arshdeep Singh, along with Nitish Kumar Reddy. Gill believes that this squad has the potential to "beat any team in any situation.

I believe that any Indian team that takes the field is capable of defeating any opponent," Gill said. "If the young players perform well here, it will give them a great deal of confidence.

He added, "It will also give us the assurance that, should we for any reason not have the specific squad we desire for the World Cup, our team is still capable of defeating any side in any given situation.
