IPL 2026 witnessed a fierce clash between the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians. Fans were anticipating a thrilling contest, but at the Wankhede Stadium, CSK stunned everyone by registering a historic 103-run victory. Sanju Samson's innings of 101 runs and Akeal Hosein's four-wicket haul played pivotal roles in CSK's triumph. However, the match garnered even more headlines due to Mitchell Santner and Shardul Thakur. In fact, Thakur was neither part of the Playing XI nor had he been selected as an 'Impact Player.' Despite this, when Thakur walked out to bat, fans began accusing MI of foul play.

During the 17th over of the Chennai Super Kings' innings, Mitchell Santner dismissed Kartik Sharma by taking a catch. He sustained a shoulder injury while making the catch. Following the shoulder injury, it was reported that he had suffered a 'concussion' (head injury), rendering him unable to bat. Consequently, when it was Mumbai's turn to bat, the 'Concussion Substitute' rule was invoked, and Shardul Thakur was sent out to bat.

What is the uproar about?

When Mitchell Santner took the catch, it was reported that he had sustained a shoulder injury. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur was given the opportunity to bat as a 'concussion substitute.' However, the term 'concussion' refers specifically to a head injury—typically caused by a collision or a sudden jolt—whereas Santner had sustained a shoulder injury. Simply put, Santner was injured in the shoulder, not the head. Consequently, when Thakur was sent out to bat, it sparked an uproar on social media, with people accusing the Mumbai Indians of foul play.

Later, when video replays were shown, it became evident that Santner's head had indeed struck the ground while he was diving to take the catch. Following the match, Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene clarified that the catch had resulted in injuries to three areas: Santner's shoulder, neck, and head.
