Dharamsala: The troubles for Mumbai Indians (MI) show no signs of abating. Ahead of their clash against Punjab Kings on Thursday night at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala, the chances of regular captain Hardik Pandya and stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav playing are extremely slim. Consequently, the five-time champions may have to take the field under the leadership of a new captain.

Bumrah or Tilak: Who Will Be the New Captain?

Although Rohit Sharma remains a part of the squad, it is unlikely that the captaincy will be handed back to him. Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Varma are currently at the forefront of the race for the leadership role.

Experts believe that Bumrah (33) could be the preferred choice. He has been with Mumbai Indians since 2013 and possesses the experience of 156 matches. Although he had previously declined a full-time captaincy role, he has already led the Indian national team in Test matches (against England and Australia).

Why Are Hardik and Surya Out of the Squad?

  • Suryakumar Yadav: He has recently become a father (following the birth of his daughter). Mumbai Indians have always been sensitive to their players' family matters; therefore, he has been granted a break from the team.
  • Hardik Pandya: He has been struggling with 'back spasms' (stiffness in the back) since the match against Chennai on May 2nd. The medical team has not yet declared him fully fit to play.

Rumors of Hardik Pandya Being 'Traded' Put to Rest

Sources have categorically dismissed the reports circulating on social media suggesting that Hardik Pandya might be traded to another team. The franchise has clarified that there are currently no such discussions, and Hardik will continue to remain a part of the Mumbai Indians in the foreseeable future.

Weather in Dharamshala and Match Update

The practice session on Wednesday was disrupted due to inclement weather, but the skies are expected to remain clear on Thursday. There is every possibility that this—the 58th match of the season—will begin on time.
