KL Rahul Injury Scare: India Coach Gives Major Update After Batter Retires Hurt
Team India suffered a major setback on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Vice-captain KL Rahul sustained an injury before the third session, forcing him to retire hurt. Rahul was batting on an unbeaten 77—having hit nine fours and a six—and was rapidly approaching a century when he was suddenly forced to leave the field. After the day's play concluded, Team India's batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, provided an update on Rahul's injury, revealing that he was suffering from a muscle strain.
Team India's batting coach provided an update on KL Rahul
After the day's play concluded, Team India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said, "KL Rahul batted very well. I think he was just experiencing some muscle tightness. He had recovered by the end of the day. When tightness occurs, it could be in the hamstring, groin, or even the arm. But right now, he seems absolutely fine. So, hopefully, he will be fully ready to play tomorrow."
The Indian batting coach appeared quite pleased with the flexibility in Rahul's batting. Rahul bats in the lower order in limited-overs cricket, whereas he opens the innings in Test cricket. He said, "He is a player who bats at number five or six in ODIs, as you have seen. When you are an experienced batsman and are willing to bat at any position to help the team, it is the mark of a great player."
He further added, "He is a very valuable player for the team. He opens the innings in red-ball cricket and bats at any position in ODIs depending on the requirement. The way he is batting right now—taking responsibility and trying to build partnerships—is outstanding. He is performing consistently well."
The pitch could become helpful for spinners later on
Batsmen found the Galle pitch quite favorable on the first day. Kotak believes that the pitch could become more helpful for spinners in the coming days. He said, "The pitch is a bit dry, and right now, it is a very good wicket for batting. Generally, the ball comes onto the bat nicely and doesn't spin much. A score of 288 for two is a good sign for us."
India dominates Day 1 of the Galle Test
Team India dominated the opening day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. Due to rain, only 73 overs of play were possible on the first day. During this time, Team India scored 288 runs for the loss of two wickets. At stumps, Devdutt Padikkal (131*) and Rishabh Pant (27*) were unbeaten, while KL Rahul retired hurt on 77. Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for 32 off 37 balls; he hit five fours and was run out. Captain Shubman Gill was dismissed by Prabath Jayasuriya for 16 off 28 balls. Jayasuriya claimed the only wicket for Sri Lanka, finishing with figures of 1 for 77 in 24 overs.
